Monteroni d' Arbia - The houses
of the ancient village, mostly restructured, narrow the Cassia/Francigena
as it passes through Monteroni d'Arbia, in contrast with the
breadth and the open spaces of the urban development of the
past few decades.
An agricultural production centre of
the ancient Republic of Siena, it preserves the sign of its
most important monument in the imposing medieval fortified
mill from the beginning of the fourteenth century, of which
the original structure is nearly intact, with its brick keep
and mill-pond.
The splendid massive structure of Cuna
farm rises on the road from Siena, a beautiful example of
a medieval fortified grain tower (13th century), originally
belonging to the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala which
used it as a massive container for grain.
Passing on through the countryside
characterized by the undulating "clay hills of Siena",
you arrive at Lucignano d"Arbia. a fortified village
with thirteenth century gates and keeps, where the Via Francigena
passed through in ancient times. The twelfth century parish
church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, holds a Crucifixion
by Bartolomeo Neri (Riccio). Handicraft production is remarkable
here, and permanent show rooms provide a lively market centre.
The breeding of the prized "Chianina"
cows is also growing. Its sport and recreational facilities
are a centre of attraction ranging far beyond the territory
of the municipality.
