This
marvellously compact region, characterised by a thermal basin
which is among the most important in Italy, far from the large
urban centres, where large forests create a healthy atmosphere,
is considered one of the most uncontaminated areas of Europe,
and is one of the finest centres for bread, wine and olive
oil.
Its history, already rich with extraordinary events dating
from the Etruscan and Roman periods, was most important during
the Middle Ages, particularly during the Longobard and Franco
periods.
For instance, like Chiusi, first an Etruscan and then a Roman
centre, it was the seat of the Longobard dukes in the Middle
Ages, and bore the brunt of the Byzantine attacks on Trasimeno.
As a result, Montepulciano represents the most ancient "Castello
di Marca", that is border post, of a whole succession
of Carolingian forts.
In
this zone, guests will find an ideal environment, not only
because of the beauty of the natural countryside and the mildness
of the climate, but also because of its cultural heritage
which is well preserved. Here, in fact, this is still alive
and present in the museums, in the archaeological ruins, the
monuments, the historic centres, the countryside, all of which
testify to an uninterrupted succession of cultures ( Palaeolithic,
Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance). All this is accompanied
by the traditional hospitality of the people who know how
to welcome visitors to their beautiful green and interesting
Tuscan countryside.
A short stay in these areas allows one to enjoy the exceptional
cultural values and quality of the environment, the sporting
and recreational activities, the good food and use the therapeutic
thermal spas. In substance, this is the opportunity to enjoy
a holiday which combines relaxation and mental stimulation
by being in direct contact with nature and at peace with the
world.
