The
history of Chianti is linked in great measure to the interminable
wars of conquest between Florence and Siena. Castellina, Gaiole
and Radda were placed at the head of the three Terzieri into
which the Administration of the Chianti League was divided,
to combat the Sienese.
It should not be overlooked, even if only visiting the area
for a few days, that over and above the main four centres,
other places of great interest are; the imposing ruins of
Monternano, the Castello di R encine
and the Pieve di Sant'Agnese (Castellina): Sarna and the Monastero
d'Ombrone. Montalto, Pieve Asciata, San Gusmè, Selvole
(all in the municipality of Castelnuovo); the Badia of Coltibuono.
Brolio,Cacchiano. San Polo in Rosso (in the Municipality of
Gaiole); Volpaia (Radda).
The whole of Chianti, especially the Sienese portion retains
in its structure and its countryside, in the people and even
in its place names, a very ancient culture which us evident
to this day.
