Marciano della Chiana - a little
town a few kilometres far from Foiano and whose name recall
to mind the noble Roman "Marcia" Family (who received
this lands, called "Fundus Marcianus", as a gift
from Silla Consul after the war against Marius).
Marciano is placed on a rectangular
shape plan and was built between 100 and 1250, when it was
ruled alternatively by Arezzo,Perugia, Siena and Florence.
The door tower with is bell (built
at the beginning of the seventeenth century) dominates the
town, together with the stronghold belonged to the famous
captain of fortune Fanfulla da Lodi, and the eleventh century
church of Sant'Andrea and Stefano, which contains a painting
by Bartolomeo della Gatta representing
the Virgin with the Child and Saints, as well as many works
by local artists.
Besides, you can finally visit the
Romanesque church of San Bartolomeo which stands in the near
village of Badicorte and was built in the tenth century by
the Camaldolites who made the castle a Monastery and lived
here until 1487.
