Loro Ciuffenna - Loro Ciuffenna,
located on the southern ridge of Pratomagno, is one of the
most distinctive towns of the Valdarno Superiore, with a history
dating back to at least 939.
The town later became part of the fiefdom
of the Guidi noble family, before falling under the rule of
Florence in 1293. The plan of the town retains the characteristics
of the medieval village with its beautiful single-arched Romanesque
bridge on the Ciuffenna and the still functional water mill
originally used to grind wheat and grains.
Only one of the two gates that originally
permitted access to the castle has endured, the tower gate
(currently the clock tower) which was rebuilt in the late
1800's. On the town's highest point stands the church of Santa
Maria Assunta (formerly the chapel of the medieval castle).
The church was enlarged toward the end of the 14th century
to surround a tower making up part of the ancient city walls,
which bears the date 1333 above the architrave of the entry.
Among the interesting pieces conserved
inside are 14th-15th century frescoes including, the "Vista
di S. Eliabetta" and "Santo Martire" attributed
to the painter Mariotto di Cristofano, native of San Giovanni
Valdarno, and a 16th century image of the "Annunciazione"
by Carlo Portelli, a native of Low. Leaving Low Ciuffenna
along the road leading to Gropina, stands the early 17th century
Sanctuario di Nostra Signora dell' Umilita notable for among
others, a 17th century "Nativita di Maria" attributed
to Matteo Rosselli, a fresco from the Florentine school (late
15th century) depicting the Madonna with baby, San Pietro,
and San Giovanni Battista, and a 17th century cloth attributed
to Agostino Ciampelli, on which is depicted "San Carlo
Borromeo in adorazione del Crocifisso".
