Castiglion Fiorentino

Castiglion Fiorentino -Castiglion Fiorentino is situated on a lofty hill (345 meters above sea level) offering a splendid view of Val di Chiana and the foothills of the Appennine mountains with its many olive trees.

According to recent scientific researches, the town of Castiglion Fiorentino dates back to Etruscan times.

It was always believed that the town was founded later during the medieval period due to the overall infrastructure, numerous buildings, the outside walls, and the Cassero.

The town's historical center offers the visitors such well " known ancient structures as the church of Saint Angelo which dates back to the XII century, the church of Saint Francesco from the XIII century and the Palazzo Pretorio of the same period. The Renaissance witnessed the construction of the Loggiato Vasariano of the Piazza del Comune, the Loggiato of the church of Gesu and the church of Consolazione, a prized example of a sacred building with its octagonal shape.

In the town's Pinacoteca, there are many famous paintings of noted artists as well as numerous prestigious gold artifacts. Among the latter are the Croce Santa or the Croce of Fra Mansueto which dates back to the XIII century, and the religious bust of Sant'Orsola from the XTV century. Among the paintings one finds signed pieces by Margarito, Bartolomeo della Gatta, Vasari, Iacopo del Sellaio, Taddeo Gaddi.

Next to the Pinacoteca, in the Palazzo Pretorio, one finds objects discovered in recent excavations in the surrounding area. These include the Etruscan Sima with the Gorgone, which dates back to the IV century B.C.
