Fiorentino is situated on a lofty hill (345 meters above sea
level) offering a splendid view of Val di Chiana and the foothills
of the Appennine mountains with its many olive trees.
According to recent scientific researches,
the town of Castiglion Fiorentino dates back to Etruscan times.
It was always believed that the town
was founded later during the medieval period due to the overall
infrastructure, numerous buildings, the outside walls, and
the Cassero.
The town's historical center offers
the visitors such well " known ancient structures as
the church of Saint Angelo which dates back to the XII century,
the church of Saint Francesco from the XIII century and the
Palazzo Pretorio of the same period. The Renaissance witnessed
the construction of the Loggiato Vasariano of the Piazza del
Comune, the Loggiato of the church of Gesu and the church
of Consolazione, a prized example of a sacred building with
its octagonal shape.
In the town's Pinacoteca, there are
many famous paintings of noted artists as well as numerous
prestigious gold artifacts. Among the latter are the Croce
Santa or the Croce of Fra Mansueto which dates back to the
XIII century, and the religious bust of Sant'Orsola from the
XTV century. Among the paintings one finds signed pieces by
Margarito, Bartolomeo della Gatta, Vasari, Iacopo del Sellaio,
Taddeo Gaddi.
Next to the Pinacoteca, in the Palazzo
Pretorio, one finds objects discovered in recent excavations
in the surrounding area. These include the Etruscan Sima with
the Gorgone, which dates back to the IV century B.C.
Of special interest is the Ancient
Library which houses incunabula, documents and codices with
intricate designs and a wealth of local manuscripts. The Historical
Archive has been catalogued and it contains documents which
date back to the XIII century.
