My best friend, her daughter, and I vacationed in a private villa on the hills overlooking Castiglion Fiorentino this past spring 06. We spent many days exploring the surrounding Tuscany hill towns (Cortona, Arezzo, San Gimimignano, Monte San Savino, Montepulciano, Lucignano, as well as day trips to Pisa and coastal Livorna and Assisi in Umbria). But we always returned home to the charming, delightful Castiglion Fiorentino. The people are polite and friendly. The quaint village is not as steep as many other Tuscany villages but offers many cobblestone streets and narrow stepped alleyways, cafe's, and good food. Our favorite spot to enjoy a tasty meal and gaze up at the villa was Hermes Cafe', located on the outer street, overlooking the tall church bell tower. How delightful to sit poolside, sipping great wine, and listening to the roar of the festivals at night and the soulful sound of the church bells in the morning. The villa and Castiglion Fiorentino truly are a little spot of heaven. If there was ever a chance to return, I'd go right away!
