Castiglion Fibocchi - The village
of Castiglion Fibocchi lies along the Via dei Setteponti,
13 Km away from Arezzo.
The village, assigned in fee ever since
the 12th century by the Earls Guidi to the Pazzi, takes perhaps
its name by one of the latter family, Ottaviano, nicknamed
"Bocco", thence the castle was called "of the
sons of Bocco" and then, by contraction, Fibocchi.
The historical centre, situated in
a banked position, appears still nowadays quiet and pleasantly
secluded, connected by narrow alleys, deceptively with a dead-end,
that on the contrary lead to otner alleys which they share
suggestive names with: Via dello Spedale, Borgo Portafredda,
Vicolo dei Palchi, Borgo S. Croce.
The Town-Hall is a characteristic palace
with a clock tower. The remains of the old circle of walls
are very interesting. The gate Porta Fredda is particularly
well preserved and restored at successive stages during the
19th century and still keeps the hewn stone arc with a lowered
curve.
In the surroundings of Castiglion Fibocchi
it is worthwhile to point out: the seventeenth-century Villa
Occhini with its Romantic-style garden, the farm houses of
S. Pietro and Ca' Maggiore estates, the remains of the ancient
parish of S. Quirico sopr' Arno (probably of early Christian
origins and active until the 14th century) and the medieval
castle of Gello Biscardo, plunged in the green of Pratomagno.
